Devon Lib Dems have uncovered shocking figures that show that last year, over 100 Devon children at any one time were placed in care outside of the County, with some being sent hundreds of miles away.

The figures come after the revelation that a seven-year boy from Devon was placed at a special school in Surrey.

Under the current Conservative administration at County Hall, Devon's children's services have been failing for 7 years. Inspectors say it is 'inadequate'. In 2012, again under a Tory administration, Cornwall's children's services were also failing and branded as inadequate. A new Lib Dem and Independent run Cornwall Council turned the situation around with a new focus, management and a fresh, child centred approach, to create an OFSTED 'outstanding' children's service.

Andrea Glover, Liberal Democrat candidate for Cullompton and Bradninch said:

"As a care leaver myself, I know how important it is to maintain community links, family ties and friendships during time in care.

"We need to properly fund and manage our children's services in Devon, learning from best practice in other areas. We need to find more good foster carers, change our approach to children's services and help young people build resilience."

Alan Connett, Leader of the Liberal Democrats at Devon County Council said:

"The Conservative administration at County Hall have refused to address our failing children's services which have been branded as 'Inadequate' by OFSTED for seven years. The huge numbers of children being sent into care placements outside of the County is shocking, but not surprising.

"The Liberal Democrats passionately believe that Devon County Council has to work to make sure no one is left behind. Devon needs councillors who will ensure that everyone has the opportunity to reach their potential and contribute to keeping Devon a wonderful place to live and work."
